If someone could help me out with translating this passage, I'd be so, so grateful! My french is really rusty. xD It's not for school or anything, just for personal interest.

Many thanks in advance :-)

Subject:Inaction
Time:07:38 am

He sat there staring at a blank terminal screen. He tried to remember exactly what it was that he was going to do next.

“Wow, this Twitter and Facebook habit has totally eliminated my ability to concentrate,” he thought.

Instinctively looking at the clock, he was alarmed at what time it was.

“2:31am… Wow, It’s tomorrow now… November 28th. Hmm.”

He smiled at the embarrassing memories. He remembered looking at the lone curled lock of hair that used to hang from the side of her forehead; the ill-fitting skirt; the smile. He remembered having conversations with her and getting distracted by the cuteness of her ever so slightly snubbed nose. He remembered being the new boy.

1997 was a confusing year. A new city, a new school, a new set of friends. The itinerant lifestyle had made it easier to compartmentalize relationships with people. It wasn’t something he preferred. Someone once had quipped that children of IAS officers were successful in life because of their ability to make friends quickly, and he had accepted that as a commiseration.

“A quick log in into the social networks I guess…”.

It had become a habit — any empty moment was occupied by “socializing” with a website. At least he had an excuse this time.

“Dear Julie, wish you a very Happy Birthday! Hope “ he wrote.

Backspace.

“Dear Julie, wish you a very Happy Birthday!”

It was 4 years since he’d broken up with her. It was painful but amicable; and they’d both moved on since. They had been great friends once, and they stayed friends since. The breakup left him in a strange place where he wasn’t quite sure exactly how much affection is too much. Especially on a Facebook wall. Better safe than sorry, he guessed.

He met Julie at a party in the first year of college. Common t-shirt colors led to a conversation about what else was in common. Not a lot, just states where they grew up, Zodiac signs and an uncanny interest in Lucky Ali. He liked her from the first time he met her, but he remembered her because of the irony in her birthdate. It was exactly the same as Divya’s.

“...Sharma. Divya Sharma. Roll Number 32” he remembered, revisiting a seldom-visited corner of his memories. Those memories were forgotten for good reason. Unlike college, which was a blast, he didn’t quite liked it when he joined Crescent Public.

The new high school was an absurdity. He had never met a bunch of more cacophonous kids before. Maybe this is a culture thing, but he’d much rather go back to his well-behaved alma-mater back in Bokaro. And somehow it seemed she knew exactly what he was thinking.

“You’ll get used to it. We’re not all that bad.”

“Well, I…”

“I’m Divya, by the way.”

He quickly found out that she was right. It was loud, but most of the kids were alright. More importantly, he had his first interaction with someone at school, and it was Divya. Amidst all the newness, he desperately needed some sense of familiarity, some sense of closeness. And when he found none, Divya became an easy substitute, even if she was that girl who sat in front of him and sometimes said Hi during break, even if he couldn’t come up with a single word to respond with. Weeks go by quickly when you have a pile of unfamiliar homework and a cute little puppy crush. And then one day Dad walks into the study room.

“Son, we have some good news. Mom mentioned how you were having trouble fitting in at your current school. We talked to the folks at this other school we think you’ll really like. I know it’s 3 weeks into the school year, but they’re willing to let you join.”

Lather Rinse Repeat. New uniform, new school bus, new school anthem that he would have to mumble through pretending to know the words.

The new school turned out to be yet another experience. It was still different from the Jesuit education imparted to him over the last 10 years and 4 schools, but he quickly found himself making a connection with the place. New interests were kindled, new friends were made, life went on.

And yet, the ponderous doodle on his notebook still said “Divya”. With a dot repeatedly penciled in so many times that it made a hole into the next page. It had been 3 months. He had new friends now! November 28th came by, he had astronomy camp at school that night. While everyone laid there on the school ground looking at the stars, he lay there thinking about parallel universes.

“#[Share]#” “Your wall message has been posted.”

“Hmm. I wonder where she is now….” he murmured as he typed in “Divya Sharma” into the search box. “There’s probably a million of them, hope I don’t have to wade through this for hours.”

Five minutes later, he was staring at the profile picture of the Divya Sharma he knew, with the same nose and the very same dangling lock of hair. In her wedding dress, with her new husband.

He smiled and stared at the browser window for a while. He clicked the “Request as friend” button, and began writing an introductory message. For some reason, the words after “Hey! Is this the Divya Sharma from Crescent Public School? Oh, btw, Happy Birthday!”

“Hey! Is this the Divya Sharma from Crescent Public School?”

“Hey!”

He smiled again, canceled the request and closed the browser window.

Some memories were best left untouched.

Hi there,

I'm currently living in Toronto, and I decided it would be in my best interest for many reasons to pick up French. I've looked into tons of classes, all of which are out of my budget by a long shot ($300, no thanks). The cheapest I've found is through the Toronto District School Board, but it's only 9 weeks long for two hours per week. I don't know if that's worth it, because I think I'd have to take another level afterwards to get somewhat close to where I want to be.

So, for any FSL people, what are some really easy ways to learn? I took French from grade 4 to grade 9, and I enjoyed it and was fairly good at it (my grades were always in the mid 80s). But I went to help my sister with her French homework last year and I was shocked to find how much I've forgotten.

I'm pretty limited in what I can do right now though, financially. I'm in my last year of college and up for a position with the city. I think it would help my career a lot to know the language, since it's one of the official languages and I will be a government worker (at some point). I also want to go to Quebec for a couple of weeks at some point, and not be hideously embarrassed when I speak to anyone other than my boyfriend.

So basically, any tips or suggestions would be great. Especially from other Torontonians who know of specific (cheap) classes or anything.

Thanks!

Subject:Brahmi in Unicode?
Time:08:31 pm
No. Its not in Unicode yet. But, there is a proposal and it has been approved as well. It should be included in the standard in a couple of years.

Check http://www.unicode.org/pending/pending.html for scripts in the Unicode Pipeline. Even the Indus script is in early proposal stage.

today in an email dad sent, really had me shaken. dad mentioned, i'm learning to live w/o u, u learn to live w/o me. that line sort of shook me. i hope he joins me soon. its abt to snow here, today shud be the first day of snow. so shud he be here, in this bitter cold or back in mumbai where the weather is at its best?

i just realised ur job, ur salary has no meaning, no value if you dont have it to share with folks u love. i miss my dad and after moms gone its like a portion has been cut off. how silly can we be running after materialistic stuff, like ur desig, ur salary, all the luxury. the true luxury is in ur relations - ur family and friends. when i return, its more quality time with my dad before i miss spending time with him!

Subject:Finding the nearest in a sorted set of int to a given int
Time:02:19 pm
Hi guys,

I'm in the middle of writing a connector to some accounting software and I've been implementing a lazy loading list of proxies because I'm dealing with huge lists of items which load slowly (even the item id s load slowly).

That's not important to the question I am asking though, basically, I want an algorithm which finds either the given search int in my sorted set (of indexes) or the nearest int contained in the list (it doesn't matter, but we can say that the algorithm has a preference for lower numbers if 2 values are equally near)

The essence of the problem is outlined here:

import java.util.TreeSet;

public class Search {
static TreeSet sorted = new TreeSet();

public static void main(String...args){

sorted.add(1);
sorted.add(3);
sorted.add(5);
sorted.add(7);
sorted.add(10);

findNearest(2); // return 1
findNearest(8); // return 7
findNearest(10); // return 10
}

private static Integer findNearest(Integer search) {
return null; //TODO halp pls!
}
}

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Subject:Indology study trip to Bedse, Bhaja and Karla
Time:09:55 pm
Went on a one-day study trip to the three ancient Buddhist caves near Pune on 29th November. Manjiri Bhalerao - our professor was with us.

From Ancient Buddhist caves

All 3 caves have a Chaityagruha and multiple Viharas. Seeing these 3 caves on a single day, we could appreciate the differences in styles. Also, with our newly learnt Brahmi deciphering skills, we had a grand time at Karla reading the various inscriptions.

From Ancient Buddhist caves

Now, another whole day devoted to Karla is necessary to properly appreciate the beautiful carvings and read all the inscriptions.

There must be a name for establishments that add you to their mailing list and (a) provide no way for you to get out of the mailing list (b) ignore repeated protests/requests to be removed.... "Spammer" does not appear adequate.

Akila, no I am not interested in 'Magic Show by Poochi Comics & Oxford Bookstore", goddamit. May your mails be redirected to /dev/null ... and may you go out of business...

Well I've been told the place we are staying is not all that safe and US in general is not safe for indians what with the recession. So a colleague of mine, who has a vehicle is responsible for driving 2 lady colleagues (which includes me too) to office and back.

Today I was the last to finish work and people had been coming and staring at me to get me out of my room. So when I finally packed fo some reason I felt they would be waiting downstairs for me. Alas there was none and no one in the other wing. I checked the car park and there was no one. So i decided to head back home via the metro. I didnt know the route and I hoped that I had gotten the station right. The worst part was that I had to change trains at Newark Penn station. Another thing working against me was the US accent. It was really hard to make out what they were telling me. Anyways I got home on time and safely.

In the meantime however, my colleague who owns the car and some other folks got really worried on not seeing me at my seat. For some reason I didn't check this persons cubicle. They searched high and low for me. Yelled my name out in office corridors, loo and parking lot. If I had been delayed by 5 mins, a call to 911 would have been made.

One of the flat balcony looks over the station. So frustrated was my colleague that he started yelling. It was embarassing with onlookers looking at him as if he were mad.

Well folks were surprised to know i had no issues in crossing the road and get to my hotel w/o any issue. Some of the guys found it difficult to come on their own. Hey but im used to traveling on my own, London, Paris, Hyd and now New Jersey. :)

Some little adventure, and im sure its not done yet. Morrow morning I'm going to have more curious people and advisors. :D

Subject:Some QOTDs after Sehwag's innings y'day
Time:10:04 am

  • I missed the big knock in the last Test. I didn't want to miss out this time. I just wanted to hit the bad balls (seriously?!)
  • Cricket is a non-contact sport, but watching Virender Sehwag bat is as visceral an experience as watching Muhammad Ali dominate the ring in his prime.
  • Virender Sehwag batted like the nearby Arabian Sea in high tide - and when Sri Lanka tried to plug one hole, he rushed in through the other.
  • Part of Sehwag would have felt for Sri Lanka (he says he feels sorry for the bowlers when he bats this well)
  • Sri Lanka had forgotten what an edge looked like.
  • In the next over, Tillakaratne Dilshan got an edge that Mahela Jayawardene couldn't hang onto. It could be argued that no sane man would have been expecting an edge by then.
  • But when Sehwag bats like he did, you feel sorry for the bowlers, put the other batsmen in the footnote, and move on.
  • Each time he went aerial, the crowd in the stands appeared to jump as high. It wasn't just bedlam though. Time after time, people turned to those standing next to them, looking bemused. Each expression said the same thing: 'Did you see THAT?'
  • On Thursday afternoon, Sehwag toyed with the greatest offspinner to play the game as though he were some glorified net bowler.
  • Thursday's tour de force brought to mind a remarkable night in Kingston when Smokin' Joe Frazier, was knocked down five times in the space of two rounds by the giant-fisted George Foreman. Boxing had never seen a puncher like Foreman, just as cricket has never seen a destroyer like Sehwag.
  • Quick by any standard, but nothing outrageous for someone who is batting's answer to Usain Bolt.
  • At Multan just over five years ago, he pretty much ended the career of one very special offspinner, Saqlain Mushtaq. Saqlain had gone into that series speaking of a surprise ball, the teesra [the third one]. After much discussion in the media box, it was decided that it was the delivery that Sehwag kept whacking over midwicket for fours and sixes.
  • Sehwag now has five of the 10 fastest double-centuries in history, including three of the first four. This though is a man utterly insouciant when it comes to such landmarks. He could well go on to obliterate Lara's record tomorrow. He certainly has a great chance to put even Bradman in the shade and score a third triple. None of those possibilities is likely to make him lose sleep though. For someone who has reduced batting to its most elemental, only the next ball matters. If it's there to be hit, regardless of whether he's on 299 or 399, he'll go for it. Which is precisely why it's such a bloody privilege to watch him play.
